Dear Miss Stemberg,
Thank you for sharing, your personal accomplishments and the different career shifts that you have made. Continuing the introductory phase between professor and student, here is a short bibliography of who I am. I am a daughter of an immigrant, hailing from the islands of the West Indies, Jamaica to be exact. I arrived in the at the US at the age of 18 in 2016, after completing my high school diploma and two years’ worth of undergraduate credits. After spending 6 months at home assisting my mother while she worked to provide for the both of us and our family back home, I decided to continue pursuing my education. I attended New York Medical Career Training Center and completed my Medical Assistant Certification program. After I completed my course, I began to apply to medical assistant jobs so I could begin to earn money, in order to facilitate a better life for myself and my mom. At that time, being new to the city and my mother spending most of her time at work, I didn’t know how to get around or even find places, therefore google became my best friend. Google showed me how to commute from my house to a public library, this was my only means of internet service other than my mobile phone. The library became my second home, it is where I was able to fill out applications for any available job I could find. I finally got a call back or should I say an email prompt, stating that I got accepted into the Summer Youth Employment Program.
I was an intern for Essen medical for 3 months, after my employment With SYEP ended they offered me a permanent position as a medical assistant. That was the highlight for summer 2017. I continued to work with Essen Medical for 2 ½ years. I began to have a drive to further my medical experience and start in a new environment. I applied to Montefiore Medical center as a Patient Care Technician and was employed in 2019 in the Department of substance abuse. Being in this environment taught me a lot about the opioid pandemic that we continue to face as a nation, it not only brought me awareness but improved my understanding on why drugs and mental illness are intertwined. My experience also showed individuals involved in this environment tend to suffer Mental Illness and in order to rehabilitate these individuals back into society we must treat both drug use and mental illness as one and not as two different categories, because they are codependent on each other.
I continued to love the field of healthcare despite its many challenges, I still I wanted to further my career. While I worked for Montefiore, I thought about changing my career path from medical assistant to a registered nurse, so I applied to CUNY to acquire an AAS degree In Registered Nurse at the Hostos Campus. The field of nursing not only symbolizes great compassion not only for ourselves but for others as well, we all need someone not only educated but also shows great empathy towards others in need. I have made great strides in my professional career and also in my personal life.
With each new opportunity I was granted, I was able to assist my mother financially. We were able to provide for ourselves and create a better living environment. We were able to change or status from immigrants to U.S citizens. We were also able to file for my remaining siblings who now resides with us. They are now content and have found their own way in the professional career paths. Despite all the challenges, I have now reached a point of satisfaction but is still eager to achieve more.
Thank you for taking the time to read this letter, I hope you have gotten a better understanding of who I am professionally and personally. My achievements and challenges have mold me into the person I am today and for that I am grateful.
Sincerely Deidre Brown
